The LEAP Ambassadors had both the honor and pleasure of attending the meeting of the Huntsville chapter of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. During the meeting, we were able to give a presentation on the Center for Law, Engagement, and Politics to the Colonial Dame members.
The Colonial Dames are a national organization comprised of women that have ancestors of American lineage dating prior to 1776. The Colonial Dames organization also specializes in genealogy. In fact, our presentation took place in the Huntsville Public Library, whose genealogy room is named after a member of the Colonial Dames, Johnnie Jo Sowell Dickinson. We had the privilege of presenting to her as well.
After saying the Pledge of Allegiance, the Texas Pledge, and the opening prayer, we showed how our nine LEAP Ambassadors are continuously engaged in the community through our various programs and volunteer opportunities.
We spoke about the ambassadors’ numerous internships, the boards that they have served on, and the volunteer hours that they have put in throughout the Huntsville area.
We also went into detail about our travels, and the opportunities that have presented themselves for us to advance and build our professional development.
The Colonial Dames were kind enough to provide us a delicious lunch, and we had an opportunity to get to know a few of the members over lunch as we chatted about genealogy and remarked about how everyone today has ties to our great nation’s history whether they know it or not. We also were able to take a great deal from meeting with the Colonial Dames. For example, we discovered that they place value on many of the same things that our organization does: volunteerism, preserving art, and of course, history. It was a great experience to mutually learn from each other, to have a chance to improve our presentation skills, and we very much enjoyed our time with the Colonial Dames.
