Christmas Comes Early: Bingo Fun with CASA

Written By: Kayla Fleming

Although the most wonderful time of the year is still six months away, CASA of Walker County brought plenty of holiday spirit to the Lowman Student Center Orange Ballroom during its annual Christmas in July fundraiser.

Organized by Laura Green, the fundraiser united hundreds of community members to support CASA’s mission of providing every child with a safe, permanent, and nurturing home.

CASA volunteers took great strides toward this mission this year, travelling more than 44,000 miles and contributing over 3,200 hours–all in the service of children!

This year’s “Christmas in July” event offered similar support. Terrence Bell–SHSU Alum, local Pastor, and Huntsville High teacher–called 15 rounds of Bingo; Victoria White (Assistant Dean of Students) announced raffle winners; and auctioneer Kevin McMillan led an exciting auction intermission. In all, the event raised some $160,000 for CASA (CASA will release its official and final results later this week), providing needed support for its volunteers and staff.

After placing our tickets for the raffle and grabbing delicious Hawaiian inspired food sponsored by Dealer Solutions Automotive, Jolie Godfrey Mortgage Team, Dr. Victoria Hsiao, and Dr. Glenda Read, it was time for the game to begin! Greg Smith, Director of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home and this year’s presenting sponsor, opened the evening with a prayer.

Although LEAP students had much of the ups and downs of the other participants, we were ultimately shut out of this year’s winnings, much to the dismay of some competitive members.

The Woodwards won twice and Stephanie won one of the raffles!

It was also fun to see the many winners throughout the evening, which offers a good reflection of the fun that was had by all.

While bingo provided plenty of excitement, the children’s art auctions were the highlight of the evening. Before each piece was auctioned, volunteers walked around the room, holding the artwork high while a video highlighted aspects of the art (which was often very touching) and the child who created it, and then the bidding began.

It was truly remarkable to see the members of our community getting into bidding wars to support CASA and the children they represent.

Mayor Russell Humphrey was, as always, impactful, spending thousands to buy three pieces, giving two back to the children that made them. Tim Rushing was also a strong supporter of CASA, purchasing multiple art pieces and donating tens of thousands of dollars. The auction did not just touch hearts though; it broke records, raising more than $50,000 in total.

Particularly moving was the presence of some of the adoptive parents on hand, couples who were in the process of adopting CASA children.

Seeing them interact with their children’s CASA advocates and the bidders on their children’s works of art was a highlight of the evening.

Just before the last rounds of bingo, Elliott Herzlich on behalf of Elliott’s Jewelers gave out Hawaiian flower Christmas Ornaments so that everyone could go home with a prize, whether they were lucky enough to win something or or not.

Any time you have good people coming together for a good cause, we see familiar faces. Marshall Altom and his wife, the Woodards, President White and Elliot Herzlich, Jason Brandolini and his wife, Victoria White and Jalon Berry, Lois Stehlik, our old friend Macey Schank (who still volunteers for CASA, despite graduating), and the Slaters.

This added to the already festive aspect of the evening, sending us all home with Christmas spirit–and the children of the region in better hands, the hands of loving families, the committed CASA advocates, and caring community members.

Fun in the Sun at the CASA Kids Expo

Written by Kayla Fleming

It’s often said that the strength of a community is found in the opportunities it creates for its people—especially its youth. Building on that idea, CASA of Walker County hosted their 3rd annual Kids Expo, bringing together organizations, families, and volunteers for a day centered around connection, learning and supporting youth.

The event was organized by Laura Green, Director of Development for CASA of Walker County. Situated in the parking lot and grounds of Huntsville Church of Christ, organizations from across the community set up tents, activities, food, and entertainment, while mascots such as the Chick-fil-A Cow, the EASCO Duck, and HEB Buddy roamed the grounds.

Central to everything were a series of featured programs, beginning with a heart-melting puppet show. Families could enjoy the synchronized dances of the Huntsville ISD Drill Team, the tumbles and flips from the Pocket Aces Cheer Company, the curated styles of the Buck & Bo Fashion show and the swirling bright colors of the Ballet Folklorico.

Informational booths included emergency services, the City of Huntsville’s Parks & Recreation (Good to see you Michelle and Joseph!), the ever-present Rob Hipp, Huntsville Memorial Hospital (good to see you Brian Goldgar!), one of our favorite bakeries (Yolk and On Bakery), Cenikor (good to see you salvador Favela!), Sam Houston State University (Good to see you Courtney Chastine!), rock wall climbing, food options, and many more.

LEAP brought together 14 of the volunteers, all positioned in the Kid’s Zone, where many of the games and activities for children were housed.

There was a mini-train, run by our Laura Green’s very own Glenngineer; a foam party by the playground in the back; three bouncy-houses for different ages; face painting; archery and a photobooth. Towards the back, there was a petting zoo offering miniature pony rides and families the chance to interact with animals such as bunnies, pigs, ducks, a llama, goats, and a tortoise. Elliot’s Jewelers sponsored a Balloon Artist and a “sketches to sparkle” Jewelry design contest for the ages 5-12.

And while we were at it, Professor Yawn decided to climb the firetruck ladder…

…for some aerial shots.

To end this wonderful event, CASA did drawings for four bicycles, making some families very happy.

As the day wrapped up, the volunteers posed for a group photo, with the train as a backdrop, and we all got our first ride on a train!

We and many of the other volunteers helped take down the event, moving chairs and tables and such, and we were able to call it a day’s work. And while volunteering involves work, it was also a lot of fun, made even more satisfying by knowing that many families had a good time at an event that is rapidly becoming a Huntsville tradition.

CASA’s Kids Expo: A Beginning

CASA of Walker County made a splash in its inaugural “Kids Expo,” featuring more than 80 family-centered organizations, food vendors, and activities, all with a common purpose: enriching the community for youth.

The event, spearheaded by CASA Development Director Laura Green, brought out dozens of volunteers–including LEAP Ambassadors–many sponsors, and hundreds of people with the idea of learning about and promoting healthy activities for children in the Huntsville community.

The event served as an informational clearinghouse for almost every activity oriented toward children and families, ranging from organizations designed to promote child well-being to more broad-ranging organizations that make supporting children part of their overall mission. Thus, in the same large grounds, you could learn about the wonderful Boys & Girls Club and the Huntsville Public Library…

…Galloping Grace…

…Huntsville Youth Orchestra…

…KSAM…

…Home Depot…

…Ken Holland’s Office, with Edward Jones…

…Huntsville Toyota…

…the Huntsville Lions Club…

…the Huntsville State Park…

…the Bluebird Society…

…and the Huntsville Police Department and Fire Department…

…and more!

Beyond serving as an informational bonanza, the Expo also offered numerous fun activities…

…networking opportunities, and some interesting food options.

We, for example, had the opportunity to eat at 3 Sistas for the first time!

Moreover, each half-hour, a key organization had the chance to inform, speak to, or perform for the crowd–allowing Parks to discuss upcoming events such as the July 4th Celebration…

…Pastor Jeff Dunn…

…the Huntsville Independent School District…

…and Mayor Russell Humphrey…

…to to do a ribbon cutting…

…HISD to present some of its talented students…

…and Maggie Collum Dance company…

…to show off some of its talented students…

Adding some luster to the proceedings, Elliott Herzlich of Elliott’s Jewelers sponsored a Jewelry Design Contest, in which children can submit artwork into a competition, with the winner having their artwork handcrafted into a piece of jewelry. The contest is ongoing, with a deadline of April 30–so don’t delay.

Of course, with it being April and with it being east Texas, the weather is liable to turn on a moment’s notice, and around 1:00pm, it did just that. The rains came, and while children might be able to have fun roping bales of hay or petting goats in the rain, (most) parents are past that point in their lives.

And while we would have enjoyed hanging around a little longer to take photographs, there wasn’t much to photograph, as vendors closed their tents, children–happy children–went home, and we took our cameras to cover.

But we sought cover feeling happy, knowing that CASA, whose vision statement is to “provide a safe, nurturing home for every child,” came closer to realizing that vision today.

Many thanks to Laura Green and CASA for putting on a great event to support the children in the Huntsville community!
