A Picture Perfect Rotary Meeting

Morgan Robertson

As our readers might guess, the LEAP Ambassadors are huge fans of the Huntsville Rotary Club and its members. So when given the chance to attend a Rotary meeting as guests, we always ‘leap’ at the opportunity!

Typically, Huntsville Rotarians meet at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum (SHMM) in the Walker Education Center conference rooms. However, this week the meeting location was moved up one floor to the exhibit gallery, which just so happens to be where our exhibit, Photos from the LEAP Lens, is on view. Rotary President Michelle Lyons reached out, and asked if we would join the meeting and provide more detail about our exhibit.

Olivia, Michelle, Jessica, Cinthia and I accompanied Professor Yawn as the guest speakers for the lunch, and we were welcomed, as it typical for the hospitable Rotarians, with open arms and smiling faces.

Following the official business of the meeting, Derrick Birdsall, Director of SHMM, gave a wonderful introduction and explained how Photos from the LEAP Lens came into being.

Rather than describe each photo in the exhibit and explain the exact conditions that made such a photo possible, which would undoubtedly bore everyone in the room, photographer or not, Professor Yawn chose a few photos that best incapsulated the LEAP principles and model. Our very own Olivia stepped into be Vanna White for the hour, and did a great job impersonating the TV personality.

From the New Mexico trip, Professor Yawn Cinthia’s version of the famous Rancho De Taos. Not only did the group rise at 4am for the chance to get this shot, but they were also able to draw connections to Ansel Adams and Georgia O’Keeffe who both famously provided their perspectives of Rancho De Taos.

One of the most favored photos from the exhibit was Olivia’s Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Much to the surprise of, well everyone, this photo was taken from Olivia’s first time in a state park! As all LEAP Ambassadors, past and present know, it’s impossible to be in LEAP without experiencing some firsts.

While most of our photos are of the outdoor and nature sort, a few exceptions can be found in the exhibit, one of which is the New York Skyline from a few years back with some LEAP Alum. Interestingly enough, this site was where Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr dueled, tying both history and photography for perfect LEAP educational experience. Professor Yawn used this photo to describe some of the mechanics of LEAP trips.

The last two photos were from the recent DC trip, where Olivia, Cinthia and Michelle attended the National League of Cities Conference, and many other wonderful sites. In preparation for the trip, Olivia read a book called “A Rift in the Earth” by James Reston, which goes into the processes and controversies surrounding the erection of the Vietnam Memorial. During this part of their visit to the National Mall they were met with the amazing surprise of actually meeting the artist of the Memorial herself, Maya Lin.

The second was an amazing shot of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home in Virginia. On this trip, the Ambassadors visited their first 3 presidential homes and were able to experience history first hand.

This academic year, we’ve had the privilege to attend Rotary three times in various capacities. Each time we depart Rotary meetings after snapping selfies, or hugging our friends, we are grateful to know that we have become part of such a wonderful community.

“Photos from the LEAP Lens” is on view until May 12, 2024, in the exhibit gallery at Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center, located at 1402 19th Street in Huntsville.

LEAP Lunches with Rotary

As an organization that aspires to serve the community, it is appropriate that LEAP spent yesterday’s lunch with Rotary, an organization with a long history (more than 100 years!) of helping the local community.

And it was an honor to present to Rotary and to share LEAP’s story with some new faces, many familiar faces, as well as some friends and mentors.

Rotary meets every Wednesday at noon at the Walker Education Center, where they cover their regular business and then open up the floor to the guest speaker, which, as already noted, was the LEAP Ambassadors.

With us being in the midst of finals, however, we didn’t have extensive time to prepare. But since this program is about our own experiences in LEAP, which we already knew, we could just discuss!

For many of us, this was our first public presentation, so nerves were natural. But we all had a chance to speak: Jessica discussed her time and growth at SHSU, including travel and educational experiences; Olivia talked about her tenure as President of the Pre-Law Society; a lively Michelle shared anecdotes about her travel;

…Cinthia discussed attending the 10th Court of Appeals, which she claims is her “first time in a courtroom.” And Morgan did a wonderful job of moderating the discussion.

We appreciated the questions and comments from the audience. Michelle Spencer noted that she saw several of us in the Texas Legislature during the 88th Legislative Session; Derrick Birdsall brought up assistance we’ve provided at some of the Museum’s events; another Rotarian mentioned that, if this program had been there when she was at SHSU, she “might have spent less time at the Jolly Fox.”

The entire lunch was wonderful, and apart from the chance to promote our program, it was a great opportunity for us to work on our public speaking and communication skills.

More impressively, we had this opportunity in a professional environment, one made comfortable by the Rotarians’ warm hospitality. It was a holiday treat indeed.

On behalf of the LEAP Ambassadors, we would like to extend our sincerest thanks and gratitude for the Rotarians for allowing us to share more about our organization, thank you to Derrick Birdsall for taking photos for us while we presented, and thanks to President Michelle Lyons for allowing us this opportunity.

Huntsville Rotary Club: A Centenary Celebration

By Olivia Discon

Those who are acquainted with the Huntsville community are familiar with its strong sense of volunteerism and service, and these qualities are sharply reflected by the Huntsville Rotary Club. Since 1923, the organization has contributed to numerous efforts globally and locally to have a positive impact on both the present and the future. On September 14, 2023, Rotary gathered to recount their club’s efforts over the past century and to celebrate their impact on communities everywhere.

LEAP Ambassadors had the privilege of assisting in small ways and the even greater privilege of enjoying the celebration with Rotary members.

Held at the Walker Education Center, LEAP ambassadors arrived early to greet and sign in Rotary members, who then went on to mingle among the large crowd present.

The friendly crowd made us feel welcome, and we encountered a few familiar faces, such as Walker County Judge Colt Christian; County Commissioner Bill Daugette; City Councilmen Russell Humphrey and Bert Lyle; and Assistant City Manager Sam Maisel.

After enjoying our conversation with our table and dinners catered by Farmhouse Cafe, former Huntsville Mayor and prominent public servant, Mac Woodward, started the evening with a brief introduction…

…followed by a warm welcome by David Thompson. It was here that we were able to comprehend the major world events the Huntsville Rotary Club had experienced, such as the rise of radio broadcasting, television, and the internet, World War II, the Cold War, and the War on Terror.

Carole Mattingly and Marcus Gillespie, two longstanding members of the club, recounted a few projects they have worked on over the years, most notably their efforts to eradicate polio, provide clean water and CPAP machines in Nicaragua. Additionally, they touched on their exchange student program and highlighted a few of their former students from across the world.

Leaders from various organizations highlighted their service to the community, and how Rotary has supported their efforts. This included Holly McMichael, the Executive Director of A Time 2 Read; Sally Davis and Juanita Hall, Supporting Housing Insecure Kids and Families in the Huntsville Independent School District; Dave Smith, Executive Director of Good Shepard Mission; and Michelle Spencer, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Walker County. Each of these organizations serves as pillars of local volunteerism and the Huntsville community. They left the group in awe of the many strides they have made in improving the lives of those around them.

The night ended with closing remarks by Michelle Lyons, the current President of the Huntsville Rotary Club. President Lyons further emphasized the importance of Huntsville’s coalition of public servants and how honored she is to represent them.

Thank you to the Huntsville Rotary Club for allowing LEAP ambassadors to attend their 100th-year celebratory gathering, and for all the excellent strides made in uplifting not only Huntsville, but the rest of the world.

Community Building with Rotary and Nancy Bocskor

February 23, 2022, Jessica Cuevas

Upon walking into the meeting room, we were greeted by welcoming community members–who also directed us to where the food was! On the “menu” there was chicken and pork, a savory BBQ sauce to go with it, potato salad, pinto beans, and bread slices. As we waited for the meeting to begin, we helped ourselves to a plate of delicious food, and we met some new people and saw some familiar faces. Specifically, we took our seats amongst the many familiar faces such as Mac Woodward and Ray Hernandez and engaged in conversations.

The Vice-President of Huntsville’s Rotary Chapter, Todd Armstrong…

…had us out of our seats as he began the meeting by ringing the loud bell, which everyone’s cue to walk around the room and greet everyone. During this period, we were even able to meet another SHSU employee, Heather Caudle, who works for the Academic Success Center–and her father, Kevin Byal, who works for the City of Huntsville.

There were interesting, moving parts to the meeting that the Ambassadors enjoyed seeing. One such activity was allowing each member to give a “shout out” or “bragging point” and paying a dollar to the Rotary Treasury to do so. We also watched a new member be inducted.

Moving through the agenda, we were eager to hear our guest speaker Nancy Bocskor.

Being able to learn more about her background and experiences in politics and serving the community was inspiring. She even spoke about Ukraine’s situation when discussing democracy “then versus now.”

Her work with helping women all over the world was moving. We left the Rotary meeting knowing the passion Ms. Bocskor has for helping anyone that comes her way in the 28 countries she has traveled to.

We would like to thank Vice-President Todd Armstrong, Michelle Lyons, and the Rotary Club for having us and giving us the opportunity to hear from Nancy Bocskor. We enjoyed learning about the Rotary Club, we were pleased to see so many friendly faces, and we appreciated the organization making us feel at home.
