High Noon in Huntsville

By Kaitlyn Tyra

After an eventful week with our guest speakers, Mr. Glen Frankel and Dr. Carl Rollyson, we concluded their visit with one of the LEAP Center’s annual Film Festivals. This year’s feature film was High Noon, the acclaimed western classic starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. Directed by Fred Zinneman and released in 1952, the film tells the story of a marshal (played by Gary Cooper)…

…who is getting ready to leave his hometown with his new bride (played by Grace Kelly) and begin a new life. However, his plans are thwarted when he learns that convicted killer, Frank Miller (played by Ian MacDonald), has been pardoned and is traveling back to town to seek revenge on the marshal who turned him in.

One of our guests of honor, Mr. Frankel, recently published his newest book on the film, “High Noon: The Hollywood Blacklist and the Making of an American Classic.”

After learning so much about the film throughout our week’s conversations, we were all enthusiastic to watch this Hollywood treasure.

With approximately 50 audience members composed of community members, SHSU faculty members, and students, the Wynne Home quickly filled up with gusts enjoying our pre-movie reception. Guests purchased the authors’ books and had the opportunity to visit with Dr. Rollyson and Mr. Frankel before they introduced the film.

Both authors had much to share with guests. Mr. Frankel not only has the expertise in film classics such as The Searchers and High Noon but has many stories to tell as a Pulitzer Prize winner for his journalism through the Washington Post. Similarly, Dr. Rollyson had stories to spare through his diverse biographical research. With subjects spanning from political figures like Michael Foot to Huntsville’s very own Hollywood star Dana Andrews, captivated guests enjoyed their conversations with Dr. Rollyson, just as they did with Mr. Frankel.

We were happy to visit with not only familiar faces, but also meet new faces to the LEAP Center. Two longtime community members were particularly special to us; Mrs. Bonnie Thorton Blalock and her new husband Mr. Ben Blalock.

Mr. Blalock was the Mayor of Huntsville from 1968-1972 and Mrs. Bonnie Blalock was a long time librarian and teacher in the community. Both had wonderful stories to share and even offered to show us their recent wedding photographs! It was a real treat to visit with them and we hope to have them at future LEAP events.

But before we knew it, we had to wrap up our conversations and find our seats. The movie was about to begin.

Gathered in the Wynne Home art gallery, Dr. Rollyson and Mr. Frankel introduced the film.

As both Hollywood scholars finished offering their remarks on the film, the rumbling drums and the strumming guitar from High Noon’s introductory theme began to play. The 80 minute film went by quickly with audience members glued to their seats, anxious to find out the outcome of the film.

Afterwards, guests visited and discussed their thoughts before the LEAP Ambassadors headed next door to Carboneros for dinner. SHSU’s Dr. Darren Grant and Mrs. Marcie Grant even joined us making the evening more memorable.

We were thankful to have time to visit with Dr. Rollyson and Mr. Frankel before they left Huntsville. Many thanks to the Wynne Home, Mr. Frankel, and Dr. Rollyson!

He-Said, She-Said: Nancy Bocskor and Dr. Carl Rollyson Introduce Sabrina

The Junior Fellows and LEAP Center have held a film festival every fall since 2009.  This year, we squeezed in an extra film presentation in the spring.  In honor of having both Dr. Carl Rollyson and Nancy Bocskor in town, we showed Sabrina, starring Humphrey Bogart, William Holden, and Audrey Hepburn.

William Holden is Nancy Bocskor’s favorite actor (more on Holden here).  In fact, he is her “most handsome and reliable boyfriend, albeit dead.” Other than being dead, he is reliably on TCM every week or so, showing up at 3am in the morning when Bocskor cannot sleep.

Bocskor is an international political consultant and a movie buff, and Sabrina not only stars William Holden, but also has a social class subtext. Dr. Rollyson is an expert on the Golden Age of Hollywood, so Sabrina seemed to be a good match for the two and fun entertainment for all.

The entertainment took place at the beautiful Wynne Home, where two of the LEAP Center students and many of the Junior Fellows have interned.

Guests included Mayor Mac Woodward and his wonderful wife, Leanne, as well as Ralph and Linda Pease.  We were also happy to have Margaret Gulledge, Charles Forbus, and Karl Mahaffey on hand for the viewing.

The film was wonderful, combining top-notch talent with humor and romance.

The general consensus among us students was that it was better than “Some Like it Hot,” which we screened with Rollyson last year.

The company was also wonderful, with a reception followed by dinner.  It was a fun night, capping a wonderful week with Bocskor and Rollyson as guests in Huntsville, TX.

We’ll be doing a Walter Brennan film festival in the fall, in honor of Rollyson’s new biography of the character-actor legend.

Let’s Talk–And Have Some Fun

After an eventful afternoon with Ms. Nancy Bocskor, LEAP Students headed to the Elliot T. Bowers Honors College Let’s Talk event for an evening of informative conversation with some of the state’s most esteemed professionals. LEAP students enjoyed diverse speakers ranging from FBI Special Agent and SHSU Alum Daniel Fuentes to Honorable Robert Eckels, President of the Texas Central High-Speed Railway.Hoyt_Students_LEAP_Web

Kicking off the event, President Hoyt was in attendance to speak briefly about the growth of Sam Houston State University and a few of its accomplishments. LEAP students received the privilege of enjoying dinner and conversation with a variety of speakers. Ariel Traub enjoyed dinner with Mrs. Barbara Cargill, Texas State Board of Education District 8 Member and Chair of the Board. She was impressed with the conversation and indicated the discussion offered “valuable insight to problems with our education system along with some possible solutions.” Kaitlyn Tyra, who also sat at Cargill’s table, echoed Traub’s sentiments, enjoying the opportunity to “ask questions concerning our schools and learn about changes underway.”

Karla Rosales and Megan Chapa dined with SHSU Alumni Ms. Patti Foster, a traumatic brain injury survivor. Megan Chapa found Foster “extremely inspirational!” and Karla Rosales found both the human story and the science behind it to be fascinating and encouraging.

Alex Galvan had the pleasure of having dinner and conversation with Dr. Carl Rollyson, Editor of the Hollywood Legend Series, and author of some 40 books—including two on Marilyn Monroe. According to Galvan, “it was wonderful to learn more about this icon, and get the back story on one of the 20th Century’s most intriguing legends.”

After dinner, co-chair of the Let’s Talk Advisory Board and Dean of the College of Health Sciences, Michael Lacourse helped close the evening with remarks. But the end of the event wasn’t the end of the evening. The LEAP Center students had an opportunity to meet with local officials attending the events…

…speakers from other tables, and revisit with Nancy Bocskor, who stayed late to visit with the honors students.

Overall, Let’s Talk gave students the opportunity to converse with professionals whom they normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to interact with and gave them the opportunity to learn about topics personally interesting to each student. Many thanks to all the speakers, Ms. Jacel Angel, and the Elliot T. Bowers Honors College for a wonderful evening.

A Night With Marilyn Monroe

Although she died at the age of 36 in 1962, Marilyn Monroe’s appeal has been both timeless and classic.  During her lifetime, her life was the subject of six books, mostly brief works, quickly done to capitalize on her popularity.  Since her death, however, there have been some 300 books written about her.  Two of these were written by Dr. Carl Rollyson, the LEAP Center’s guest speaker during a screening of “Some Like it Hot” at the Walker Education Center.

which included not only the two Marilyn Monroe books, but also a well-received book on Huntsville native Dana Andrews.

Following an introduction by Dr. Rollyson…

…”Some Like it Hot” proved to be a crowd-pleaser, as it has been for the fifty-five years since its release in 1959.  According to the American Film Institute, Some Like it Hot is the greatest film comedy of all time, and with a cast of Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, George Raft, and Joe E. Brown, some great songs by Monroe, and an enduring appeal, it’s tough  to argue with that choice.

The film was directed by Billy Wilder, one of the great Hollywood Directors.  In addition to what may be the film industry’s greatest comedy, he also directed what might be the industry’s greatest film noir (Double Indemnity) and one the great romantic comedies (Sabrina) and melodramas (Sunset Boulevard), as well as one of the first films to deal seriously with alcoholism (The Lost Weekend).  Some Like it Hot was his second film with Monroe; they previously did The Seven Year Itch; and Wilder knew how to direct Monroe.

Rollyson discussed the reversal motif apparent throughout “Some Like it Hot,” from the gender reversals to the literal reversals that recur throughout the chase scenes.

Crowd_McLaughlin_Traub_Web

Most people know that Tony Curtis adopts a Cary Grant persona when wooing Marilyn Monroe, but it may be less known that he also used his Grant impersonation to ask out his most famous Hollywood date: Janet Leigh.  According to Leigh in her memoir, Curtis called her up and pretended to be Cary Grant asking for a date.  Leigh was speechless, and as she stammered, Curtis revealed the gag.  This might be something of a questionable tactic, seemingly setting up the date for a letdown, but it seemed to work for Curtis, who ended up marrying Janet Leigh.

Rollyson_Smiling_Texas_Seal_Web

Dr. Rollyson also noted that, while Curtis was doing his Cary Grant impersonation in Some Like it Hot, Jack Lemmon adopted the mannerisms of Joe E. Brown, his co-star (and film love interest!).  The introduction added to the enjoyment of an already-enjoyable film.

Following dinner, the group enjoyed dinner and additional conversation at The Homestead. While sampling the Spicy Tomato and Red Pepper Soup and the Fresh Mozzarella and Garlic stuffed Tenderloin Filet, a handshake deal was made to bring Dr. Rollyson back in 2015, when his biography of Walter Brennan will be published. Tune in!
