Exploring the heART of Campus

With the hurricane season upon us and our whirlwind of events this week, heART of Huntsville was also on our radar. As a yearly tradition, the LEAP Ambassadors are always excited for this cultural program that teaches community members about art in Huntsville. This first week, we were especially excited because Mr. James Reston was accompanying us through our tour of Sam Houston’s campus.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, A Rift in the Earth

We started off our tour at the Gaddis-Geeslin Gallery. Currently, the gallery is hosting Photography in Place, an exhibit showcasing the works by photographers Jean-Sebastien Boncy, Leigh Merrill, and Allison V. Smith.

Dr. Michael Henderson, Department Chair of the Art Department, who generously support this program, provided some insight on these impressive works.

Also in attendance was Dr. Melissa Mednicov, art history professor at SHSU, who offered more information on the artists.

SHSU, heART of Huntsville, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Gaddis Geeslin Gallery

As we finished viewing the works in the gallery, we began our hike towards the College of Humanities and Socials Sciences (CHSS). Along the way, Professor Mike Yawn introduced us to Sam’s newest art along Avenue J. Entering the CHSS building, Professor Yawn pointed out a piece by Jesus Moroles that stands on the east grounds of the College. Mrs. Linda Pease, the Cultural Services Coordinator for the Wynne Home Cultural Arts Center, also imparted her knowledge of  his work due to various pieces being housed at the Wynne Home. Walking through the building we learned about the art by Bruce Marion that hangs at the west entrance.

SHSU, heART of Huntsville, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, GPAC

Next on our itinerary was the Gaertner Performing Arts Center (GPAC), but we decided to take a detour and step into the Newton-Gresham Library. As we all kept very quiet, we viewed works by Charles Pebworth and David Adickes. There was also an exposition of James Reston’s book of which he seemed to enjoy.

SHSU, heART of Huntsville, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Newton Gresham Library

From there, we walked over to the Gaertner Performing Arts Center. Named after James Gaertner and his wife Nancy, the building is home to the Fine Arts Program at Sam Houston State University.  Most people would agree that the GPAC is one of the most impressive buildings on campus. It is home to multiple recital halls and a lot of art.

As Mr. Thompson, gave us a tour of the Performing Arts Center, the heART of Huntsville participants were in awe as they got a look around. Hanging above us, we were told, was a wood and metal mobile named “Around the Flower Wall” by James Surls.

SHSU, heART of Huntsville, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, GPAC

James Surls is a very well-known artist who is an SHSU Alumn and a former professor at Sam. The LEAP ambassadors have seen art by Surls on several trips. The GPAC is also home to a Jesus Moroles sculpture and a series of photographs. These last pieces everyone found most intriguing as he is most known for his sculpting skills.

When we were done with our tour of the Performing Arts Center we walked across campus to Austin Hall where a spread of Asian food was waiting us. We made our plates and settled in for a chance to relax in the air conditioning and eat our dinner.

It was nice to learn some history behind Austin Hall and get to spend some quality time with all of the guests.

As the night ended we said our “see you later” to Mr. Reston who had enlightened us with his company for the past couple of days.

SHSU, heART of Huntsville, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors,, Austin Hall

We were not only excited to have learned a lot about the art on campus but also have spent some time with great people from our community. With everyone delighted with the first evening of heART of Huntsville, we were looking forward for next Tuesday’s art filled adventure. Next week we will take everyone around the Downtown Square and explore the City of Huntsville.

A Grand Time with Colonial Dames

The LEAP Ambassadors had both the honor and pleasure of attending the meeting of the Huntsville chapter of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. During the meeting, we were able to give a presentation on the Center for Law, Engagement, and Politics to the Colonial Dame members.

The Colonial Dames are a national organization comprised of women that have ancestors of American lineage dating prior to 1776. The Colonial Dames organization also specializes in genealogy. In fact, our presentation took place in the Huntsville Public Library, whose genealogy room is named after a member of the Colonial Dames, Johnnie Jo Sowell Dickinson. We had the privilege of presenting to her as well.

After saying the Pledge of Allegiance, the Texas Pledge, and the opening prayer, we showed how our nine LEAP Ambassadors are continuously engaged in the community through our various programs and volunteer opportunities.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Colonial Dames

We spoke about the ambassadors’ numerous internships, the boards that they have served on, and the volunteer hours that they have put in throughout the Huntsville area.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Colonial Dames

We also went into detail about our travels, and the opportunities that have presented themselves for us to advance and build our professional development.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Colonial Dames

The Colonial Dames were kind enough to provide us a delicious lunch, and we had an opportunity to get to know a few of the members over lunch as we chatted about genealogy and remarked about how everyone today has ties to our great nation’s history whether they know it or not. We also were able to take a great deal from meeting with the Colonial Dames. For example, we discovered that they place value on many of the same things that our organization does: volunteerism, preserving art, and of course, history. It was a great experience to mutually learn from each other, to have a chance to improve our presentation skills, and we very much enjoyed our time with the Colonial Dames.

Here Comes The Judge

By Ryan Knesek

Sam Houston State Alumnus Judge Albert McCaig, visited the College of Humanities and Social Sciences for breakfast on Friday, October 20.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Judge Albert McCaig

Judge McCaig was invited to the University to be presented with the Alumni Service Award during that evening’s Distinguished Alumni Gala. During the breakfast, he was joined by Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Abbey Zink; Political Science Department Chair Dr. Tamara Waggener;

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Judge Albert McCaig

Associate Dean Dr. Glenn Sanford;

and others in the Holcombe Room.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Judge Albert McCaig

Judge McCaig graduated from Sam Houston in 1972 and has been heavily involved with the University ever since. The LEAP Ambassadors were able to learn about the inner workings of the court system from a judge’s perspective, and also the mindset required to do the job efficiently. One thing of interest to us was his ROTC background. During his involvement in ROTC, he distinguished himself by becoming essential to the creation of the SHSU Military Science Alumni Club. We also thought it was impressive how his involvement with ROTC has persisted, as he has donated generously to provide scholarships for Military Science majors.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Judge Albert McCaig

Conversing with Judge McCaig before the ceremony was a unique experience that broadened the understanding of the intricacies involved with law. The event was a successful precursor to his award ceremony, and we thank him for his generosity towards Sam Houston.

The LEAP Ambassadors would like to thank Deanna Briones, Dean Abbey Zink, Kristin Trojacek, and Dr. Tamara Waggener for allowing us to participate in this event.

No Restin’ with James Reston

When an author of James Reston’s magnitude comes to campus, we do our best to have things organized and ready, and today was no exception.

Lunch with Aramark, by Makayla Mason

The LEAP Ambassadors were able to begin our day having a special lunch with not only Mr. Reston, but also with SHSU Vice Provosts, Dr. Mary Robbins, Dr. Christopher Maynard, as well as Assistant Professor of Mass Communication, Dr. Grant Weidenfeld.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, A Rift in the Earth

While the room filled with friendly conversation, the LEAP Ambassadors and our guests grabbed our sandwiches, chips, and cookies and sat down for a great conversation. The conversation was centered around Mr. Reston and his newest book, “A Rift in the Earth.” Our guests explained how Americans reacted to the Vietnam War and how the war split the nation politically, a split that persisted for many years after the war. Dr. Robbins, with much emotion in her eyes, recalled herself as a teenager watching the news and responding, at times with tears, over the body count announced every night.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, A Rift in the Earth

It was an emotional and enlightening experience for us as Ambassadors, as our guests pointed out, that we have never experienced an event that split the nation in such controversy.  Before leaving, Mr. Reston signed some books…

…we thanked our Vice Provosts and began preparing for our next event of the day.

“Firing Line” With James Reston, By Karla Rosales

After a great lunch in good company, we moved to the Mass Communications Studio for a television interview, one hosted by the MCOM Department, with Mel Strait leading the technical crew. As part of the audience  20 or so students participated in this television interview between Professor Yawn and James Reston.

Some of us arrived earlier to make sure everything was ready and to greet students as they walked into the studio. During this time, we had a chance to chat with the audience. It was interesting to hear different ideas from other students on their feelings towards the many topics that Mr. Reston would discuss. The students came prepared with a lot of research on Mr. Reston along with an ample set of interesting questions for him. After all, he is a very interesting person who has been involved in many different important events in history.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, A Rift in the Earth

The interview began with Professor Yawn asking Mr. Reston about his research as David Frost’s assistant regarding Watergate and President Nixon.  We also got to watch a small clip from the movie “Frost-Nixon” where Mr. Reston is played by Sam Rockwell.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, A Rift in the Earth, Frost-Nixon

We got to learn about how the movie and how it compared to the events in real life. According to Mr. Reston, they were pretty similar, including the part where he considered not shaking President Nixon’s hand!

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, A Rift in the Earth

He discussed his devotion to finding the truth behind the Watergate scandal and was determined to find the evidence they needed to force President Nixon to confess to his wrongdoings.

Professor Yawn also asked about his NPR documentary on Jim Jones and the tapes he acquired from Jonestown. Mr. Reston actually had to seek counseling after his research on the mass suicides in Guyana. He explained that such research was especially difficult for him as he thought about the young victims in Jonestown while also having children at home.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, A Rift in the Earth, Jim Jones

Finally, he discussed his book “A Rift in the Earth” where he wrote about the controversy concerning the Vietnam Veterans Memorial by Maya Lin. He also told us about some of his background research for the book.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, A Rift in the Earth

This topic was especially interesting as we will be visiting the Vietnam Memorial on our trip to Washington, D.C. in only a couple of weeks! The interview came to an end with some very interesting questions from the students in the audience regarding all the different topics Mr. Reston had discussed.

After the interview, each student received a copy of “A Rift in the Earth” and had a chance to get it autographed by Mr. Reston!

Later in the day, Mr. Reston would join us again for heART of Huntsville, but with a little downtime, Mr. Reston decided to spend some time in the Texas Prison Museum.

As the door closed on Mr. Reston’s visit, we had a chance to reflect on the wonderful opportunities we’ve had to learn new things, enrich our already rewarding education at SHSU, and make a new friend.  We look forward to the next time Mr. Reston has a chance visit our town.

A Day with James Reston

Dr. Mednicov’s Modern Art Class, by Staci Antu

Mr. James Reston had a busy day planned at SHSU. With back to back events scheduled for the day, the LEAP Ambassadors were prepared to help Mr. Reston provide meaningful insight on his latest book “A Rift on Earth.” The book talks about the famous Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall located in Washington, D.C. and its controversial history.

Mr. Reston had the opportunity to speak about the Wall to Dr. Melissa Mednicov’s class, where the students proved interested in knowing more about the Vietnam Era and about how the memorial got started.

Lunch with Reston, by Bianca Saldierna

Following James Reston’s busy morning, we met for lunch at one of the LEAP Center’s favorite local restaurants, Carbonero Rotisserie. We did not have to go far to give our guests the opportunity to try a different cultural cuisine, authentic Salvadorian food! Joining us was former Mayor of Huntsville, Mac Woodward, and the News Director of KSAM, Larry Crippen. We all began by sampling El Salvador’s most notable dish, pupusas, as well as, some sweet fried plantains. As lunch continued, a myriad of conversations resonated across the room. One of the most interesting discussions was about the famous Watergate scandal and James Reston’s role in helping journalist, David Frost, prepare the televised interviews with Richard Nixon. Mr. Reston also gave us an overview of his unpublished book addressing the tragedy of 9/11, which we are looking forward to seeing in the bookstore shelves. With the great company and the great food, time flew by, and finally it was time to head on to Houston.

Brazos Bookstore Booksigning, by Kaitlin Tyra

Although traveling to Houston can be a bit of a drive, especially during rush hour traffic, the LEAP Ambassadors eagerly traveled to Brazos Bookstore in Houston for Mr. Reston’s book signing. Thankfully our drive down was uneventful and we had a few minutes to browse Brazos’ unique collection of books before the talk began.

A Rift in the Earth: Art, Memory, and the Fight for a Vietnam War Memorial was published only a month ago. The book discusses the process of creating the Vietnam War Memorial, the submission contest, the controversy around the design of the Memorial, as well as the art and architecture behind the Memorial. The LEAP Ambassadors were eager to learn from Mr. Reston about such an important piece of our nation’s history.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, Brazos Bookstore, Vietnam War Memorial, Maya Lin

Interestingly, the architect that won the submission contest, Maya Lin, was a twenty-one-year-old undergraduate student at Yale. Mr. Reston spoke highly of Ms. Lin and of her courage throughout the vetting process of the Memorial. His book details the controversy behind not only the design of the Vietnam Memorial, but also the Memorial itself.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, Brazos Bookstore, Vietnam War Memorial, Maya Lin

The War created divisiveness in the United States and the Memorial starting what Mr. Reston calls the “Second Vietnam War”. Some did not think the United States should memorialize a lost war and such a horrible blemish of American history, while others wanted to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice of the 58,000 Americans who gave their lives in service.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, Brazos Bookstore, Vietnam War Memorial, Maya Lin

Mr. Reston’s description of the Memorial throughout the book provided vivid imagery to the reader. He explained some of the hidden symbolism of the art like the reflective quality of the black granite which allows the Memorial visitor to imagine themselves in the place of the names on the wall through its reflective nature. The audience truly felt the importance and impact of the Memorial through his words.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, James Reston, Brazos Bookstore, Vietnam War Memorial, Maya Lin

Ultimately, the Vietnam War Memorial stands as a symbol of unity today; unity in a time of divisiveness and turmoil in the country. The Memorial reminds us not only of the lives lost fighting this specific war, but in all wars. The names inscribed in black granite remind of us the toll war takes on a country, and serves as a poignant reminder of the tragedy Americans endured. Although Mr. Reston’s book is a reminder of the tragedies of war, it also gives the reader a sense of pride with the emergence of the Memorial.

Mr. Reston concluded the book talk by visiting with the audience and signing guest’s books before we departed off to dinner.

Dinner at Azuma Sushi, Brian Aldaco

With a very successful book signing finished, we thought it was time to have some dinner making the short drive to Azuma Sushi and Robata Bar. As we have visited this place before, it has now become a LEAP favorite and we wanted to show Mr. Reston the delights of this sushi restaurant.

As always, we ordered a little bit of everything. Ranging from raw sushi for the curious, some fried sushi for those who did not appreciate the raw sushi, and kabobs for everyone to enjoy. Regardless of which group you were in, the Crazy Irishman Roll was the favorite. This yummy roll of salmon, tuna, and avocado wrapped warmly together by green soybean paper, flash fried, and then covered by spicy mayo, unagi sauce, green onions, and masago was a mouth-watering joy to feast on. But if one amazing culinary experience wasn’t enough, the grand finale was dessert time. Not knowing what to expect, we were intrigued by the dessert options that they had. Tempura banana with ice cream, fried red bean ice cream, and Mochi (a confection made with pounded sticky rice and stuffed with an ice cream filling).

Azuma Sushi

It was with a sigh of satisfaction that we moved away our empty plates and continued our chatter about the day’s successes. With a busy week still ahead of us, we appreciated this moment to relax and enjoy our conversations with Mr. Reston.

High Spots in Huntsville, Texas

The players from Northwestern State (our opponents in football) were not the only visitors we had in town this Saturday. On this delightful afternoon, we were also accompanied by the Brady Team, comprised of Congressman Kevin Brady and his district and D.C. staff. As part of their district retreat, Congressman Brady and his staff toured various parts of the district with Sam Houston State University as their prime stop in their Huntsville itinerary.

While the LEAP Ambassadors were wrapping up their presentation to the Colonial Dames, Christina and Brian excused themselves to join the staff in Huntsville’s very own Bennie J’s restaurant, where they met with Brady’s team.  And, from there, the group traveled to the Gaertner Performing Arts Center (GPAC).

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Congressman Kevin Brady

During their tour at the GPAC, they were joined by Craig Brossman, the Facility Manager of the GPAC, and Ronald Shields, the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication. The staff visited the atrium, where they saw works by Jesus Moroles, James Surls, and Kathleen Ash, and also visited Dean Shield’s office, where they saw art by Harry Ahysen and Michael Henderson, which put them in a contemplative mood…

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Congressman Kevin Brady

Of course, we also took them to the main Recital Hall, where we joined by President Dana Hoyt and her husband, John.  Congressman Brady introduced Hoyt as “the best University President in the country,” and, in a pleasant surprise, the SHSU Choral Group  returned from their lunch break and offered to perform!

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Congressman Kevin Brady

It was at this point that the hall’s perfect acoustics were put to use and shown off. With voices resonating across the hall, and the reverberating organ playing in the background, they entranced all with their musical talents.

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Congressman Kevin Brady

Congressman Brady thanked the music director, Dr. Joshua Bronfman, and noted that the performance “gave him goosebumps.”

Of course, congressman Brady’s staff could not leave Huntsville without learning about the man who started it all, so the team headed to Sam Houston Memorial Museum. Luckily, Mac Woodward, the former Huntsville Mayor, was on hand to give a museum tour.

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Congressman Kevin Brady, Sam Houston Memorial Museum

We always appreciate time spent with Mr. Woodward, and this was no exception as he took time out of his Saturday to educate visitors about Sam Houston and Huntsville, Texas.

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Congressman Kevin Brady, Sam Houston Memorial Museum

Mr. Woodward began with some historical facts of the Tennessee senator who would one day make his way down to Texas. The staff was left to roam the museum freely and learn about one of the greatest politicians in Texas History.

Mary Cordes, District Operations Director for Congressman Brady, told us that during her tour of the nation’s capital she learned that Sam Houston’s desk is one of six still kept in the old senate chamber. It was exciting to hear that Texas roots are famous even in DC!  Congressman Brady’s staff was intrigued by the amount of historical artifacts the museum held.

The Museum has Sam Houston’s constitution from the time when he served in the US Senate and a few things that belonged to Margaret Houston.

Before leaving, Congressman Brady talked about the unveiling of the Elisabet Ney bust and how excited he was to be placing it in the Ways and Means committee room.

This was the last stop In Huntsville for the staff before heading on to other parts of Congressional District 8.

It was an enjoyable afternoon with Congressman Brady and his staff, not to mention President Hoyt and Mayor Woodward.

First Saturday in October: Fair on the Square

By Bianca Saldierna

Following an eventful week with James Reston, the LEAP Ambassadors were eagerly looking forward to the first Saturday in October. What were they anticipating with such eagerness you might ask? Well, none other than Huntsville’s 43rd Annual Fair, better known as Fair on the Square, of course!

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Walker County Fair on the Square

This year, over 350 booths livened up the streets with countless treasures, ranging from antiques to apparel, and the main attraction of the fair, food! As the festivities approached, shoppers find this event handy to come out and hunt for some holiday gifts and decor. Every year, approximately 15, 000 shoppers from all around Huntsville and from out-of-town attend the fair, and the LEAP Ambassadors were no exception.

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Walker County Fair on the Square

We started our morning off with excitement on such a joyous day, as this year, the LEAP Ambassadors decided to reach more people by volunteering at two different booths. Some ambassadors gladly assisted at the Walker County Republican Party Booth by giving out free shirts, pins, and a variety of bumper stickers to passers-by.

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Walker County Fair on the Square, Walker County Republican Party

Others assisted at the Boys and Girls Club of Walker County arts and crafts tent located in Rather Park, the area designated for the little ones to safely enjoy the fair.

At the crafts booth, we were tasked with helping children enjoy their day with free projects including decorating cards and creating their own flamboyant bracelets.

Scattered throughout the park were other fun activities including: a petting zoo…

…a monster slide, and numerous games; of course, feeding the animals and pony rides were popular among the kids…

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Walker County Fair on the Square

….and to be honest, we were even temped to get a ride! Sadly, none of us weighed less than the permitted sixty pounds. Nonetheless, watching kids and even adults have so much fun, brought us back wonderful childhood memories.

LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, SHSU, Walker County Fair on the Square

Time flew by and as our shifts ended, we joined the crowd in the search for unique treasures.

Once again, the long-awaited Fair on the Square had come to a successful close, and we all look forward to volunteering again at such a high-spirited event next year!
