From Youngster to LEAPster, and Beyond

For many years, this little guy, Ryan Brim (the one on the left), was our mascot.

He started as a “junior, Junior Fellow,” moved into being an Honorary LEAP Ambassador, and is now a full-fledged high-school graduate.  In August, he’ll move to Fayetteville, where he will begin the Engineering program at the University of Arkansas.

In his introduction to the team, he was known as a polite kid who was up for various adventures and would even participate as his skills and mother would allow.  He began blogging–more or less under orders–at the age of 9, but mostly at this stage he was an observer, getting to be a kid, albeit one with a lot of opportunities.

Nine of SHSU’s ten Austin Interns were able to make the recognition: Karla Rosales (Rep. Zerwas’s office), Christina Perez (Rep. Jim Murphy’s office), Brian Aldaco (Rep. Will Metcalf’s office), Alejandra Galvan (Sen. Lois Kolkhorst’s office), Beatriz Martinez (Rep. Armando Martinez’s office), Vincent Melore (Rep. Tom Oliverson’s office), Spencer Copeland (Rep. Larry Phillips’ office), Mitchell Sanchez (Rep. Todd Hunter’s office), and Kaitlyn Tyra (Senator Schwertner’s office).  Kim Roach, who is interning for the Texas Association of Counties, could not attend.

SHSU, LEAP Center, SHAIP, Sam Houston Austin Internship Program, Texas Senate, Senator Charles Schwertner

The students’ internships will end in six days.  At that time, three of the interns will start new jobs (Beatriz Martinez, Christina Perez, and Brian Aldaco), two of the interns will return to previous jobs (Karla Rosales, Kaitlyn Tyra), and four of the interns will officially graduate (Alejandra Galvan, Spencer Copeland, Kim Roach, and Mitchell Sanchez).  Of the four graduating, Kim Roach will be going to the Bush School of Public Service; Alejandra Galvan is deliberating among three top law schools (Baylor, UH, and TAMU) who accepted her, and Mitchell Sanchez is leaning toward South Texas College of Law.

The resolution in its entirety can be seen here.

We have received tremendous support while completing our internships.  Thanks to Senator Schwertner for the recognition, to President Dana Hoyt and all of SHSU for putting faith in us to do well, and to the Texas House and Senate offices (and Texas Association of Counties) for taking us in and making us feel at home for the entire session!

Mount Sacred Heart School Honored at Texas Senate

While SHSU’s Austin Interns awaited recognition on the Senate floor, they saw some promising 8th graders from Mount Sacred Heart School (MSHS) in San Antonio.  These 8th graders, as it turned out, were being recognized by Senator Bob Menendez, who also graduated from MSHS!

The students were unfailingly polite and well dressed.  From the opening prayer…

A couple of families were able to make the trip from San Antonio. The Brisenos and the Riou families watched with pride as their children were recognized from the Senate floor.

These young men will graduate tomorrow (May 24th) and will be attending Central Catholic High School in San Antonio.  The schools is an all-boys school, and it has served the young men and future leaders of San Antonio since 1853.

A Capital Day in Austin!

With SHSU gearing up for finals, the LEAP students didn’t spend a full day in Austin, but with help from veteran LEAP Ambassadors, they made the most of the time they had.

Following a late night (blogs submitted at 1:38am), Megan Chapa, Staci Antu, and Jennifer Holton awoke early to manage visits to the TX Capitol and the LBJ Presidential Library.

____________________________________________

Texas Capitol Building

The visit to the Capitol was immensely rewarding, beginning with a short tour, where we learned that the TX Capitol:

  • Is the sixth tallest capitol building in the US and is, in fact, larger than the US Capitol;

  • Is the largest in square footage (the extension alone is 670,000 feet);
  • has doors so heavy that 17.5 pound door hinges are required.

Of course, a highlight was the “whispering gallery” in the rotunda, where you can stand, speak, and hear your own instantaneous echo.

LEAP Ambassadors, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, LEAP Center, SHSU, Texas State Capitol, Austin, LBJ Presidential Library

We also saw the old Texas Supreme Court building, a small room in the Capitol!  It’s really no wonder they moved.

It wasn’t all fun and games.  Christina Perez, intern for Rep. Jim Murphy, led us on a tour of the Capitol building, where we learned a lot and had some fun, too!

Part of the fun was visiting the offices of the interns with whom we shared dinner the night before.  It was a great chance to see their work environment, learning more about how things work, and seeing their passion for their job.

Alex Galvan, Brian Aldaco (who showed off his fancy lobbyist-provided calculator), and Karla Rosales served as office guides.

Christina also took us to the House and Senate galleries, where we watched some of the action on the floor…

…and posed for photos…

…and even got a waiver on the “no-standing” rule for one photograph…

We’re not sure, but we think Megan’s repeated winking at the Marshal may have encouraged him to let us break the rules a bit.

Although it was a short visit, it was a nice counterpart to our previous evening’s stroll around the capitol grounds, and we really appreciate Christina and the other Austin Interns/LEAP Ambassadors providing support of our tour.  Although  Megan was a veteran of the state capitol and Staci had visited previously, it was Jennifer’s first time, and a great way to experience her first visit to the Texas Legislature.

LBJ Presidential Library

Again, Megan was a veteran of the LBJ Presidential Library, and Presidential Libraries in general–she’s been to four–but it was Staci and Jennifer’s first time in a presidential library.   It’s a lot more fun than it sounds!

We began by watching an eleven-minute overview of LBJ’s life…

…and generally enjoyed the exhibits.

The most substantive areas, however, were the exhibits on legislation that Johnson passed, and there was much to see!  Obviously, Civil Rights is Johnson’s most impressive legacy…

…and this area was the highlight of the Museum.

Or perhaps the most impressive aspect was being able to see how much he was able to accomplish in only five years, while also seeing the history that transpired during his life–from the advent of flight, WWI and WWII, the Civil Rights movement, and the moon landing.  It was a great way to learn not only about LBJ, but also about the 20th century.

It was also a beautiful day in Austin.  To cap off the day, our trip, and interactions with some truly wonderful people–from Jeff Guinn and Stephen Harrigan to the Austin Interns–we captured some of Austin’s beauty and one of its most notable landmarks in a farewell photo outside of the Library.

LEAPing into Literature (and History!)

As Sam Houston State University students are wrapping up their semesters, LEAP Center students set out for another new adventure in Austin, TX.  Bestselling author and award-winning investigative journalist, Jeff Guinn, reached the tail-end of his book tour featuring his new book, The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple, in Austin. The three-hour drive to attend his book signing at Book People was a special treat for us, a mix of history, story-telling, literature, and politics. With this in mind, we hit the road knowing the evening would be exciting and informative.

The trip to the Austin was swift and filled with great conversation. Staci, Jennifer and I, all strangers, quickly got acquainted with one another during the ride. I, being the LEAP Veteran, shared my experiences with the LEAP Center and my previous encounter with Guinn when he came to SHSU last year, hoping to increase anticipation for the two others—and it worked!

Guinn had generously agreed to meet with us and a few Austin interns at Whole Foods prior to his book talk.

Jeff Guinn, The Road to Jonestown, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, SHSU

For an hour and a half, he discussed his prior books (Go Down Together, Manson, The Autobiography of Santa Claus), his current book (The Road to Jonestown), and his future book (a work on the friendship of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford).

Jeff Guinn, The Road to Jonestown, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, SHSU

He also gave us insight into the publishing process and the financial side of things. Clara Herrera, a colleague of Mr. Guinn’s, joined us as well and briefly shared her experience as a journalist. As always, Guinn’s stories were intriguing and we were hooked! Before we knew it, it was time for Mr. Guinn to head over to Book People to make his author appearance.

Stephen Harrigan, author for a famous historical novel The Gates of the Alamo and A Friend of Mr. Lincoln (among others), facilitated the Q&A interview. For us, it was a two-for-one treat.

Jeff Guinn, The Road to Jonestown, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, SHSU, Stephen Harrigan

The interview began with the discussion of the early life of Jim Jones, who grew up in Indianapolis and was eventually the leader of the Peoples Temple. One of the interesting things Mr. Guinn talked about was how Jones sold monkeys door to door to financially operate his temple.

Jeff Guinn, The Road to Jonestown, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, SHSU, Stephen Harrigan

After learning about Jones’s childhood, one of LEAP members, Brian, was chosen as a volunteer to demonstrate how Jones preached to his followers.

Jeff Guinn, The Road to Jonestown, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, SHSU

For example, Jones would tell one of the audience members (actually, a confederate) that they were going to get cancer, and he would drop chicken guts into their mouth when no one was paying attention.

Jeff Guinn, The Road to Jonestown, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, SHSU

Eventually the person would throw up and “get rid” of the disease being “healed” by Jones himself. Guinn played the role of Jones, Brian was the faithful assistant, and Staci was a member of the Peoples Temple. This was a demonstration of how Jones manipulated his followers into maintaining their loyalty to him.

Jeff Guinn, The Road to Jonestown, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, SHSU

After the interview, the audience had the opportunity to ask questions and get their books signed.

Jeff Guinn, The Road to Jonestown, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, SHSU, Stephen Hernandez, Book People

Following the book signing, we departed Book People and headed to a local Indian restaurant called The Clay Pit. Jennifer and Staci had never eaten Indian food, and were therefore forced to venture from their comfort zones. While enjoying authentic Indian dishes such as tikka masala, goat curry, and vindaloo, we conversed over the day’s events, highlighting our favorite parts. My favorite part was the book signing because we got special insight into the life of Jim Jones.

After dinner, we walked a few blocks from The Clay Pit to the Texas Capitol to see its after-hours beauty. After posing for a few pictures in front of the Capitol building…

LEAP Ambassadors, Texas Capitol Building, Austin, LEAP Center, Center for Law Engagement And Politics

…we explored the buildings extension and Austin’s historic Main Street. This short sneak peak into Thursday’s adventures made us excited for the next day ahead of us.

Austin, Capitol Building, Texas Capitol

One special note: Although we were caught up in the history of Guinn’s narrative and his story’s about his career, we also noted his generosity.  He was generous for meeting with us, but he also showed the same generosity to his co-host, Stephen Harrigan, calling him one of the 2-3 best writers in the state of Texas.  He also complimented his friend, Clara Herrera, noting that she was one of the talented young writers currently doing good work.  It wasn’t false praise, but with a big book signing ahead of him, it would have been easy for him to focus on that.  Instead, he thoughtfully took time to share the spotlight with others.

Civics 101: LEAP Center’s Citizenship Preparatory Class Helps Again

For the 10th consecutive year, the LEAP Center partnered with the Huntsville Public Library (HPL) to offer a citizenship preparatory class to local citizens.  Led by HPL intern Staci Antu, with volunteers from SHSU, the LEAP Center offered Tuesday night class to more than 30 immigrants for five weeks.

The class kicked off with words by local Council Member Joe Rodriguez, who discussed his immigrants parents and their struggles.  He also discussed his career as a police officer, in the FBI, and in city government, as well as the benefits of citizenship.

Over the course of the first four weeks, the immigrants learned (1) the process of becoming a citizen…

Huntsville Public Library, LEAP Center, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, SHSU, Citizenship Preparatory Class

…and (2) the questions that might be asked about the Civics portion of the Naturalization Exam.  Although only one section of the test, this is in many respects the most important section.  From a list of 100 questions pertaining to US history, politics, and geography, immigrants are asked a randomly generated 10 questions from the list of 100.  They must get six correct to pass this portion of the test.

This year, 33 immigrants signed up for the class, representing 8 different countries and four continents.  In addition, Doris Cooper, a local citizen, attended the class for a second year, taking notes, offering her own observations, and helping out.  Other volunteers included SHSU students Jose Polio…

Representatives from the Daughters of the American Revolution came in on Week 4 and distributed pocket constitutions, flags, and other patriotic resources for the immigrants.

For the final week of the class, the featured speaker was local immigration attorney Audrey Biggar.  Ms. Biggar discussed the legal aspects of becoming a US Citizen, discussed the application fee ($725), and answered (many) questions.

The final week is also the week that the class explores holidays.  The Civics portion of the Naturalization class may include questions about holidays?  Which holiday is observed on the last Monday in May?  Or, which holiday is observed on the fourth Thursday in November?  The answer to the latter question, of course, is Thanksgiving, and the immigrants and volunteers host their own Thanksgiving.

Each immigrant/volunteer brings food from their native country, providing a smorgasbord of wonderful food options–tamales, pupusas, spaghetti, collard greens, pork, chicken, cookies, rice pudding, cupcakes, and more!  Even the drinks showed diversity: horchata, chocolate horchata, and refresco de ensalada.

KBTX also sent reports to the event, interviewing Gilda Bettis, an immigrant who, after 33 years in the US, is seeking her citizenship and Antu.  It was Antu’s second time on television…

A Running Start to Washington, DC

Anxiously, I answered the phone call from Melissa Richmond, Vice-President of Running Start, knowing the fate of my last semester of undergrad would soon be revealed. She greeted me kindly and delivered the news that I had obtained a fellowship spot with the organization. Trying to maintain composure, I accepted without reservation knowing that this would be a time of exponential growth for me.

Congressman Martha Roby, LEAP Center, SHSU, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, Running Start

Running Start is a nonpartisan organization which strives to enhance the representation of women in American governance. The organization trains and equips young women across the nation to run for political office. This fellowship program, in particular, is unique in that it selects 7 college-aged women to intern in congressional offices for one semester. Interns are required to work in a congressional office Monday-Thursday, and attend political training on Fridays.  When I accepted this fellowship, I knew that placement would be an integral part of my overall experience in D.C.  After much research and consideration, I requested to be placed in Representative Martha Roby’s office, and she welcomed me to her team.

Congressman Martha Roby, LEAP Center, SHSU, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, Running Start

Congressman Roby represents Alabama’s second district and is a well-respected woman of Congress. She sits on two of the most important House Committees— Judiciary and Appropriations. Along with being a mother, wife, and friend, she strives to represent her constituents in Washington well.

Congresswoman Martha Roby, Megan Chapa, SHSU, Running Start, LEAP Center, Center for Law Engagement And Politics

Interning during this critical time in American Government has truly been an insightful experience. Aside from the invaluable experience I get from working in the office, I have had the distinct privilege of witnessing the transition of a new administration and a new congress. \Washington DC, Presidential Inauguration, Donald Trump, LEAP Center, SHSU, Center for Law Engagement and Politics

I have even become more familiar with legislative processes and policy issues. Focusing on Health Care and Human Trafficking issues this session was an instinctive choice as these are two issues which are important to me. Whether it is attending policy briefings or writing up appropriation memos, I have gained a new appreciation for experiential learning.

The beauty of working in Representative Roby’s office is that each day brings a unique experience. Although I have a short morning routine to prepare for each day, the day’s course is often adventurous and unpredictable. However, Team Roby does its best to roll with the tide—that’s an Alabama reference.

Congressman Martha Roby, LEAP Center, SHSU, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, Running Start

Representative Roby also made time to sit and led me interview her! We discussed the intricacies of her role in government and the family she has structured around it. This gave me a special insight to what it is like to be a woman in politics.

Congressman Martha Roby, LEAP Center, SHSU, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, Running Start

The training and mentorship Running Start and Representative Roby’s office have provided has truly made me a better-rounded individual. Both offices have opened up a many networking opportunities.

Congressman Martha Roby, LEAP Center, SHSU, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, Running Start, Congressman Will Hurd

While most of my time in Washington has been spent working in Congress, I have had some time to explore the historical sites and museums as well. From the Washington Monument in D.C., to the Statue of Liberty in New York…

Congressman Martha Roby, LEAP Center, SHSU, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, Running Start, Statue of Liberty

I am always captivated by the beauty of these sites and the sacrifices that were made to found this great nation. Visiting art museums and National Parks are two of my top interests, so I carved out time to visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Great Falls.

Congressman Martha Roby, LEAP Center, SHSU, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, Running Start

I have also had special opportunities such as observing oral arguments before the Supreme Court and attending the Texas Delegation with TSUS Board Members and SHSU’s President Hoyt at  he U.S. Botanical Garden.

Congressman Martha Roby, LEAP Center, SHSU, Center for Law Engagement And Politics, Running Start, President Dana Hoyt, Sean Cunningham, Chancellor Brian McCall

I also had the chance to see the nomination hearings for Supreme Court Justice nominee Gorsuch.

Interning for Congresswoman Roby and being a Star Fellow has reaffirmed my aspiration to become a public servant. Not only has this experience given me the confidence to go after my dreams of becoming a politician, but also showed me that with hard work, it is possible.

A Hoppening Good Time: Wynne Home Easter Egg Hunt, 2017

If it’s Easter in Huntsville, there’s an Easter Egg Hunt at the Wynne Home Arts Center.  This year’s version was led by Victoria McClendon-Leggett, the Wynne Home Intern (courtesy of the LEAP Center), and the result was a great success!

With more than 150 people in attendance throughout the day, it was the largest such Easter Egg Hunt in Wynne Home history.

But with that kind of crowd, it involved extensive set up by a hardy crew of volunteers, such as Bianca Saldierna, who drove in from Rosenberg to help…

…and Bella Abril, who has served as the Easter Bunny for the past three years, and comes early to help place (they aren’t really hidden) eggs…

The event began with games and activities such as face painting…

Sammy also stuck around for his annual showdown with the Easter Bunny–a paw to paw egg toss.

Of course, what most people were there for was the Easter Egg Hunt.  With parents often suspiciously in lock-step with their children…

…the 1,200 eggs were soon located.

There were even golden eggs among the lot, and these eggs brought special prizes….

It was a fun day, made possible by the energetic folks at the Wynne Home, generous sponsors (thank you Target, Wal-Mart, and the Friends of the Wynne), and some great volunteers–thank you Jasmine Moss (former Wynne Home intern), Jessica Northam (former Wynne Home intern), Beatriz Martinez (former Wynne Home intern), Bianca Saldierna, Bella Abril, Stephanie Fors (who was the grill master this year), Michelle Hebert, Margaret Gulledge, Allison Faith, and Mike Yawn.   Thanks, too, to Paul Olle who once again who volunteered his photographic talents to the event (his photos will be posted in the future).
