Keeping up with Qatar: Diana Untermeyer and the World Affairs Council

The LEAP Ambassadors have attended more than 40 World Affairs Council events, but we’ve never attended an event at the World Affairs Council Headquarters in Houston, Texas.

That changed on Wednesday, September 12, when we visited attended a presentation by Diana Untermeyer, author and wife of Chase Untermeyer, the former Ambassador to Qatar (and personnel director for the White House under George H. W. Bush).

Ms. Untermeyer was introduced by the Executive Director of the World Affairs Council, Maryanne Maldonado.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, World Affairs Council, Diana Untermeyer, Ambassador Chase Untermeyer, Qatar, Maryane Maldonado

Having lived in Qatar for many years, traveled to the region extensively, and having visited with many of the leading business, political and cultural leaders, Ms. Untermeyer was uniquely positioned to offer this presentation.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, World Affairs Council, Diana Untermeyer, Ambassador Chase Untermeyer, Qatar

Her presentation was designed to provide information for those–like us–who like to learn more about others, and for those who are specifically considering going to Qatar with the World Affairs Council.

Ms. Untermeyer offered her first impressions of the country: scorpions, everywhere!; the beautiful Arabian horses; and Arabian Coffee.  She then proceeded to provide a nuanced and detailed set of facts and factual interpretations about a country she clearly loved living in.

There is a growing population in Qatar, increasing from 800,000 in 2004 to 2.7 million today.  It has the 3rd largest gas field in the world, is the world’s largest LNG exporter, and has the world’s highest per capita income–at 125,000!

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, World Affairs Council, Diana Untermeyer, Ambassador Chase Untermeyer, Qatar

These characteristics undoubtedly contributed to it being selected as the 2022 World Cup Host, a huge honor for the country and, in fact, the entire region.  Accordingly, Qatar is improving its infrastructure, sometimes spending as much as $500,000 per week!

Untermeyer’s presentation prompted numerous questions, many of them relating to the role and safety of women in Qatar.  Ms. Untermeyer offered reasoned responses to these questions, indicating that she always felt safe in the country, found people their immensely hospitable and helpful, and suggested that, while women were not yet fully equal citizens, their progress was far ahead of many countries in the region.

Following the formal presentation, we are able to ask questions in a less formal setting, explore the maps adorning the WAC walls…

..and to spend additional time with the Untermeyers.

After taking a properly posed picture with Ambassador and Mrs. Untermeyer, we headed back to the car and were especially eager to try a new restaurant for dinner.

“Mary’z” is a Lebanese restaurant that fit perfectly with the middle-eastern theme of our evening. We tried falafel, hummus, baba ghannouj, and a deliciously cheesy flatbread, and that was all before our entrees came out! Anne, who is currently taking an Arabic class taught the rest of us how to correctly pronounce some of the phonetically trickier menu items like “Lahm Meshwe” and “Shish Tawook.”

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Mary'Z

My favorite thing that I tried was the baba ghannouj, which is mashed eggplant mixed with olive oil and various seasonings, but all of the food was wonderful.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Mary'Z

We semi-regretted our appetizers because we had absolutely no room left for a Baklava dessert when our waitress asked us.

We ended our evening and hit the road back to Huntsville all feeling extremely full.

Ice Cream and Ice Breakers: Kicking off the Fall

At least once during the academic year the LEAP Center hosts an event for students looking to learn more information about the Pre-Law Society, LEAP Center Events, or the LEAP Ambassadors. We do, however, encourage a free-ranging discussion and much fun–in short, the conversational topics go far beyond the latest in school news.

SHSU, LEAP Center, Pre-Law Society, Legal Kats, LEAP Ambassadors

When not just socializing and whilst crunching on cookies and digging into delicious ice cream, students learned all about the LEAP Ambassadors, the Austin Internship Program, and the other various events that are offered throughout the semester by the LEAP Center.

SHSU, LEAP Center, Pre-Law Society, Legal Kats, LEAP Ambassadors

It was a great opportunity for the students that attended to meet and connect with other students that shared their interests. Students weren’t the only people who attended, however! Dean Zink and Associate Deans Sanford and Callaway also stopped by for the opportunity to grab a sweet treat and mingle with the students in the Holcombe Room.

Students were also able to spin our wheel and win a prize! Our prizes ranged from “study packs,” which contained various school supplies, to dry erase boards for their dorm rooms, or even portable batteries.

SHSU, LEAP Center, Pre-Law Society, Legal Kats, LEAP Ambassadors

There were plethora of questions about what the LEAP Ambassadors do and how students can get more involved in the organization which we were happy to answer, and even more happy to see such interest in what we do!

SHSU, LEAP Center, Pre-Law Society, Legal Kats, LEAP Ambassadors

As the social came to a close, students who were interested in attending the Pre-Law meeting directly after filtered out, and we began to clean up with the hope that next year would be just as successful. The LEAP Center is excited to host our Social again next year!

Breaking into SHSU the LEAP Way

The day before the first day of classes two LEAP Ambassadors tried to assist a group of 17 incoming freshmen with the transition to full-time college.

With clear instructions from Candice Wilson (Program Coordinator for First-Year Experience), Makayla Mason and Chase Kennemer developed an ice breaker called “Chain.”

Each student introduced themselves by stating their name, one thing they are scared of about starting college, and then a fun fact about themselves such as their favorite color or the sports they played in high school. Afterward, a student who shared the same fun fact as the student previously would link arms with that student and begin their introduction. This students had a great time getting to know one another and opening up about their fears. In the end, the ice breaker showed that we were all connected to one another and that we all shared the same initial fears when starting college.

After the ice breaker, we addressed some of their fears by answering questions and giving basic advice. We discussed the pre-law society, the LEAP Center and the events it hosts like the mock LSAT and the mock law class, all of which are excellent tools for those who want to pursue a career in law. Overall, the group felt more comfortable starting their freshman year and we enjoyed meeting these students and hope to see them at upcoming LEAP events!

Hawaii in Huntsville–Wynne Home Fun

Although we started the day in Huntsville, Texas, after arriving at the Wynne Home we were transported to tropical Hawaii in a matter of seconds. We grabbed a lei and prepared for a fun-filled event.

The occasion was the Wynne Home’s annual Hawaiian Luau and, as with all things Wynne Home, we try to be there to help.

We began by assisting with set up.  This involved insuring that there were selfie-stations…

One of the favorite activities each year is the Limbo contest, and that proved true this year.  And, as with previous years, we had to explain and re-explain the rules…

A hula hoop contest featured numerous talented people…

The kids then teamed up and competed in a beach relay where they took turns scooping sand from one bucket and running and placing it into another. Running and dropping sand made the game fun for the kiddos who competed for tickets and toys.

These events provided children the opportunity to not only have fun, but win a lot of prizes in the contest.  Following an enjoyable coda featuring Ballet Folklorico, the crowd wrapped up with some more food, a bit more hula hooping, and some final selfies.

Live and On Air: LEAP Does KSAM

In the process of learning more about their local community, LEAP Ambassadors also have the opportunity to discuss their events with local media.  On their first day of school, the students visited with Larry Crippen– the hard-working News Director for KSAM Radio.  Crippen provided the students with the opportunity to discuss their recent and upcoming events, which the students did with relish!

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, KSAM, Around Town, Huntsville Texas

Maggie Denena, a LEAP Center Student Worker, discussed past event, such as the LEAP Center’s numerous trips this summer as part of a grant project on American Photographer Mark Burns.

SHSU, LEAP Center, Big Bend National Park, Mark Burns, Photography, EURECA

Makayla Mason discussed some of her activities–such as her trip to Hawaii–and our upcoming activities, such as our trip to the Texas Tribune Festival in late September.  (See upcoming events here!) and our planned visits to Houston for various author-related events.

In addition to informing the community of our goings-on, this experience also provides students the chance to learn media relations and communications.  Even the most articulate people can freeze when a recording device is in their face…

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, KSAM, Around Town, Huntsville Texas

…but with Larry’s comfortable professionalism, the students were able to learn the process, inform the public, and gain a new experience all at once!

Literature, Crime, and Law

The “L” in LEAP stands for “Law,” but it could also be an abbreviation for “Literature,” given the Center’s regular appearances at book signings and author discussions.  This week the LEAP Center enjoyed a talk by Patricia Hunt Holmes, whose first novel addresses the problem of  international human trafficking.

Patricia Hunt Holmes spent three decades as an attorney for Vinson & Elkins, one of the largest law firms in the country.  For the last two decades of her career, she was a partner at the law firm.  She also has a Ph.D. in Russian and Asian History.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Patricia Hunt Holmes, Brazos Bookstore

She’s a smart woman.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Patricia Hunt Holmes, Brazos Bookstore

Following her retirement a few years ago, Holmes began taking workshops on writing, and the idea of a novel took shape.  The result of that journey is “Searching for Pilar,” a novel that spans Mexico and the US, with much of the narrative set in Houston–one of the largest human trafficking hubs in the country.

Holmes began her talk by reading from the novel, focusing on a passage that lays out how a person might get ensnared in human trafficking.  In this case, the novel’s main character, Pilar, shows up for a job interview, where she is drugged and kidnapped.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Patricia Hunt Holmes, Brazos Bookstore

This scenario was inspired by a true event, and Holmes assiduously researched the novel to make it ring true.  In fact, one of her sources was Linda Geffin, the former Chief of the Harris County Special Prosecution Unit.  Indeed, Ms. Geffin attended the discussion, and thanked Holmes for “addressing a serious issue” in the form of a thriller so that “more people might become aware of this issue.”

Following the reading, Holmes offered a brief slide show, illuminating locations that inspired her work.  Then, Dr. Sandra Frieden (Professor of German at UH), led an engaging Q & A with Holmes .

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Patricia Hunt Holmes, Brazos Bookstore

Following the discussion, Ms. Holmes signed books, chatted with new fans, and caught up with long-time friends.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Patricia Hunt Holmes, Brazos Bookstore

While Holmes signed books, Bianca Saldierna was able to strike up a conversation with Ms. Geffin, who discussed the formation of the Special Prosecution Unit, and her own experiences as Chief.  Ms. Geffin was engaging and helpful, offering an insight and advice to Saldierna, an aspiring attorney.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Linda Geffen, Brazos Bookstore

By the end of the event, it was just Saldierna, Geffin, and Holmes (and the nice folks at Brazos Bookstore), and this provided Geffin and Holmes a chance to catchup a bit and Saldierna a chance to learn from two experienced and successful attorneys.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Patricia Hunt Holmes, Brazos Bookstore, Linda Geffin

It was Ms. Holmes’ first major book signing, and she handled it well. While providing an intriguing overview of the book, she also informed her audience of the seriousness of human trafficking in Houston, spent time with each member of the audience, and took time to help a young woman with a bright future.

A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening: With Ludovico Einaudi at Jones Hall

Even when LEAP Ambassadors graduate, they continue to contribute educational opportunities for SHSU.  So while Bianca Saldierna graduated in May of 2018, a couple of months later she organized a small group for dinner, followed by attendance at a Ludovico Einaudi concert at Jones Hall in Houston.

Our dinner was at La Fisheria, which specializes in Mexican seafood.  Three of us–in an act of almost willful redundancy–ordered the same item: sampler tacos.  The more adventurous of us had Tamal con Camerones and Vuelve a la Vida.  The food was delicious, and we highly recommend the restaurant, both for its casual ambience and food. It also is conveniently located in the Theater District, so it was a short walk to Jones Hall, where we would be attending the concert.

Einaudi is a composer and pianist who performs with five other musicians.  These five other musicians are highly versatile, playing (by our count) somewhere between 14-20 instruments, including the cello, violin, xylophone, drums, tambourine, gongs (including a water gong), and many instruments that weren’t immediately recognizable.  One, for example, resembled a birdcage.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Ludovico Einaudi, Jones Hall Houston

With a dynamic video background, great lighting, and beautiful music, the show was wonderful.

Einaudi began with a one hour set featuring his piano work in collaboration with his musicians.  The music was generally uptempo, with most of the songs finishing with a rousing crescendo.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Ludovico Einaudi, Jones Hall Houston

With the audience fully engaged, Einaudi embarked on a forty-minute solo set.  These songs bled into each other, such that it was not always clear when one piece ended and the next began.

At the conclusion of this section, Einaudi then turned to face the audience–for the first time–and invited his accompanying musicians back on stage.  With new background video, fog, and more uptempo music–mixing pop, folk, international and new age–Einaudi found new ways to engage the audience.

Einaudi closed to a rousing–standing–ovation…

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Ludovico Einaudi, Jones Hall Houston

…that eventually brought the performer back for an encore.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Ludovico Einaudi, Jones Hall Houston

The evening exposed us to the beautiful music of Einaudi, while also giving us a chance to spend time with LEAP Alums who have wasted no time after graduation in providing educational and cultural opportunities to others.

Summer Fun in Phoenix

Early Morning Hike, by Maggie Denena

Today, the LEAP Center hiked Pinnacle Peak in Scottsdale, Arizona.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Phoenix, Pinnacle Park, Hikes

The peak rises to an elevation of 3,169 feet and offers a 1.75-mile trail exploring the area. The weather was beautiful and the views were incredible. Pinnacle Peak offered scenery of towering saguaro cacti, strawberry hedgehog cacti, jumping cacti and many other forms of dry desert plants and shrubbery.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Phoenix, Pinnacle Park, Hikes

We chose a relatively painless hike for our first day to get ourselves acclimated to the weather in Arizona.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Phoenix, Pinnacle Park, Hikes

We enjoyed seeing such perfectly groomed golf courses and pools at the bottom of the rugged, dusty mountain.  What is interesting about the trail is, instead of forming a loop around the mountain, the trail ends at a separate point and hikers must return the way they came, making the hike a total of 3.6 miles!

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Phoenix, Pinnacle Park, Hikes

Some of us increased our field of vision by climbing on big rocks and boulders scattering the landscape.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Phoenix, Pinnacle Park, Hikes

Our new vantage points showed us just how high up we really were! These risky attempts certainly paid off and we were able to capture some great shots of the mountains around us.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Phoenix, Pinnacle Park, Hikes
Pinnacle Peak is a man-made trail and is kept up by maintenance for the safety of hikers. One thing we all learned was that jumping cacti do attack!

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Phoenix, Pinnacle Park, Hikes, Jumping Cholla

Professor Yawn was the unfortunate victim of these dangerous predators and had to have a small bundle of barbs removed from his hand.

My favorite part of the hike was climbing on a boulder over looking the side of the mountain, offering an unusual view.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Phoenix, Pinnacle Park, Hikes

One thing I experienced that was new to me was the different type of climate here in Arizona; instead of the suffocating humidity we know all too well in Huntsville. Arizona air is drier and easier to function in,but can quickly turn dangerous if you are not diligent about staying hydrated. Overall, the hike was a great experience and I look forward to the many more hikes during our trip to Arizona and Utah!

After some time to recuperate at the hotel after the hike, the LEAP Ambassadors headed to the Phoenix Museum of art. There, in the permanent collection, we saw many of our favorite artists: Maya Lin,

and many others.

We were even able to see a painting by Kehinde Wiley, the artist that did the official portrait of Former President Barack Obama.

The temporary exhibit by Valeska Soares, titled Any Moment Now, was a series of sculptures, media, and interactive art that were linked by the motif of time.

We also saw works by Anish Kapoor…

One of the great places to see a sunset is Papago Park’s “Hole in the Rock.”  As the name suggests, it is a hole in a large rock–almost a mountain–in which visitors can perch and watch the sunset.

Following sunset, the LEAP ambassadors headed to Rustler’s Rooste for dinner to cap off a day full of activities. At the main entrance to the restaurant there’s a Longhorn laying in his pen; and being from Texas, everyone truly felt at home. When walking into the building, the country twang is immediately felt, but with an Arizona twist. While waiting on a table, the LEAP ambassadors enjoyed listening to a live band performing classic country music (from the likes of Hank Williams, Brooks & Dunn and many more) as fellow patrons line danced.

SHSU, LEAP Center, LEAP Ambassadors, Rustlers Rooste

Once seated, everyone tried fried rattlesnake and cactus for the first time; and it was delicious!

The fried rattlesnake and cactus was just the beginning. Once finishing that, everyone shared a huge platter of “Cowboy Stuff”….

…which ranged from steak and fish kabobs, to pork ribs and chicken wings that literally fell off the bone.
